What I enjoyed about their talk was their drive and passion for what they do. I asked Stitch to come because when he teaches me to paint, he has a natural encouragement and positivity with a hint of sarcasm. During paint nights, he would talk about his numerous jobs, moves, and just let things happen the way they are. Why I felt he would be perfect to talk to my class is that he is comfortable in his own shoes, owns his actions, and has a sense of confidence.
Although AVID is a class where we promote the college-going culture, I am also aware that our student population will take different pathways in their lives. I seek out people who can be role models to these students, and my underlying goal is to allow my students the chance to see and understand that success is not measured by the education you have, but really be successful in learning a trade you can be proud of.
I also wanted my students to understand that reaching goals can take a long time, but that they should invest in a career that they love to do. Education can never be taken away from you, but after school is over the next chapter in your life would be a career you love. So, follow your dreams in whatever pathway that it takes you. And be the change you want to see in the world, make a difference in whatever you do, and have a sense of purpose.
